The Association of Women's Health, Obstetric and Neonatal Nurses (AWHONN) will be hosting its annual convention on June 21-25, 2008 in Los Angeles, CA at the Los Angeles Convention Center. AWHONN is the leading professional association for nurses who specialize in the care of women and newborns. Our members include neonatal nurses, APRN's, women's health nurses, OB/GYN and labor and delivery nurses, nurse scientists, nurse executives and managers, childbirth educators and nurse practitioners.
The Goal of the 2008 Convention is to enhance and empower the
many voices caring for women and newborns by:
- Integrating diverse knowledge and expertise across the
continuum
- Creating and sustaining partnerships to optimize health
outcomes; and
- Advocating for best practice
Proposals are being sought for RESEARCH and INNOVATIVE PROGRAM PAPERS & POSTER presentations. To enter your proposal, click on the "PAPER AND POSTER SESSIONS" link located below this section. Descriptions and additional information pertaining to each topic area is as follows:
Research Paper:
- Each paper session will be limited to 30 minutes with the exception of research symposia which are allotted 60 minutes. Time should be allowed at the end for questions and answers.
- This is a blinded review.
- A maximum of three people may present a research paper.
- Paper presenters will be provided an LCD projector, computer, screen and lectern with microphone. No other audio/visual equipment will be provided or may be used. AWHONN does not permit use of flipcharts, overheads, slides or videocassettes during paper presentations.
- There are three categories of research papers for which you may submit an abstract, each with their own criteria for selection-
- Clinical Research: Clinical research starts with a clinical problem and includes the following elements: a clinically relevant problem statement and research/hypothesis; conceptual framework, if applicable, and literature review; methodology, including design, sample procedures and data gathering strategies; and data analysis, interpretation and implications for nursing practice/future research.
- Evidence-Based Practice Project: Evidence-based practice projects or translation research is evaluative research on the adoption of evidence-based guidelines into practice. Elements include explanation of current practice and proposed change; implementation and evaluation strategies; results and implications for practice, education or research.
- Research Symposium: Symposia are collections of three research papers that relate to each other and a specific topic. Submissions must include an abstract of each paper and a cover letter describing the symposium and how the studies are linked. Criteria for selecting clinical research abstracts will be used to evaluate the individual abstracts as well as the symposium as a whole.
Innovative Program Paper:
- Innovative program presentations are about innovative programs implemented in a variety of practice settings. These are newly created and implemented programs which address challenges in women’s health, obstetric and neonatal nursing practice, education or administration.
- Papers describing programs with demonstrated outcomes will receive priority consideration.
- This is a blinded review.
- A maximum of three people may present an innovative program paper.
- Each paper session will be limited to 30 minutes, which should include time at the end for questions and answers.
- Paper presenters will be provided an LCD projector, computer, screen and lectern with microphone. No other audio/visual equipment will be provided or may be used. AWHONN does not permit use of flipcharts, overheads, slides or videocassettes during paper presentations.
Poster Presentations:
- Poster topics should be related to convention theme and goals and address challenges in women’s health, obstetric and neonatal nursing practice, education or administration.
- Presenters are expected to be at their posters and available for questions during specified times.
- Attendees can earn a maximum of 5.0 AWHONN contact hours of independent learning CNE by viewing clinical and innovative program posters.
- Selected poster presenters will be provided with a 4ft. X 8ft. corkboard and chair. Electrical outlets will not be available.
- A maximum of two people may present a poster.
- There are two categories for poster presentations for which you may submit an abstract, each with their own criteria selection-
- Innovative Program Poster:
- Rationale for program
- Purpose or objective of the program clearly identified
- Program creativity and originality
- Description of major program outcomes
- Timeliness of program
- Relevance of program for women’s health, obstetric and neonatal nursing
- Implications for women’s health, obstetric and neonatal nursing practice, education or research
- Research Poster:

All presenters will be responsible for their own travel and all expenses related to their presentation. All presenters are required to register to attend the convention and will be eligible for a $75 discount off full convention registration fees. If you are asked to repeat your session, you are entitled to a $150 discount off full convention registration fees.

No names or titles should be included in the abstract title or text for blinded reviews. Nor should the abstract title appear in the text. Names will be automatically hidden during the abstract review process and will be automatically inserted and properly formatted upon publication.
Presenting authors will be automatically informed of the unique ID numbers and passwords assigned to their abstracts. Abstracts may be viewed and modified at any time between submission and the deadline, using the assigned ID# and password.
