Application of warm compresses and position change during second stage of labor is the standard of care. Perineal trauma may result from childbirth. Application of warm compresses and positional changes during the second stage of labor, decreases the degree of perineal trauma (Hasting-Tolsma, Vincent, Emeis, Francisco (2007). The purpose of this descriptive study is two fold: first, to explore the effect of warm compresses applied to the perineum and position change during the active phase of the second stage of labor, and second, to determine compliance with these implementation by labor and delivery nurses recorded in OB TRACE VUE. Nurses will receive an inservice developed by the researchers. Medical records will be reviewed and the data will be analyzed to determine nurses’ compliance and determine the effect of these measures on perineal trauma. It is anticipated that patients, who receive warm compresses and positional changes during the second stage of labor, will have a decreased rate of perineal trauma. The results of this study will be available prior to the time of the conference. | ||
