F3 - Jump Across the Chasm with QRIIM: An Effective Ob Safety and Quality Improvement Model

Disciplines: Professional Issues (PI)

Learning Objectives:
  1. Identify the need for an OB patient safety framework.
  2. Describe available tools for creating a safety culture.
  3. Describe the QRIIM model and its applications.
Submission Description:
Healthcare has been inundated with numerous attempts toward quality improvement that have proved unsuccessful as demonstrated in Crossing the Chasm. The Institute of Medicine notes that a culture shift with a focus on patient safety is essential to improve and sustain changes in clinical practice. This can only be achieved through effective multidisciplinary stakeholder involvement. Quality Improvement through Reflection, Identification, Implementation, and Measurement (QRIIM) has demonstrated effectiveness in one obstetrics unit and may be applicable for other clinical microsystems.
