Mexican American Mothers' Experience of Newborn Intensive Care

Irene Hurst, RN, PhD, Nursing, New Mexico State University, 2521 N. Main, Unit A #178, Las Cruces, NM 88001

This preliminary ethnographic study examined the NICU experience of Spanish speaking mothers of Mexican heritage who live in the colonias along the New Mexico and Mexico border. The findings will describe the challenges these mothers faced in their efforts to obtain family-centered care (FCC). A discussion of health care provider actions and health care services that facilitated and hindered FCC will help nurses to identify ways to improve FCC for these women and their families.
