Abstract:
A Leadership Journey with Family-Centered Care
Teresa Krummen RN MSN

Our Leadership Journey with Family-Centered Care (FCC) began in May of 2006. Acceptance and participation in the 18 month Johnson and Johnson Pediatric and Sigma Theta Tau Leadership Academy for Maternal Child Health Mentor/Mentee program has assisted with our FCC goal. Our project is moving forward with FCC at Miami Valley Hospital’s MCH patient care areas. Our Hospital consists of a level three NICU, approximately 4700 births in the Labor and Delivery area and 200 natural births in hospital’s Birth Center and a 44 bed post partum area. As Mentor and Mentee we agreed to begin this journey committed to a partnership with a mutual growth and success with FCC. We have achieved our success through:

·        Motivation to lead and create an effective interdisciplinary team

·        Challenge the process

·        Enable others to act

·        Model the way

·        Inspire a shared vision

·        Encourage the heart

The first of many tasks of this journey was to revive the current FCC committee. Committee members were evaluated for their passion, belief and knowledge of evidence based practice, and leadership abilities. The new leadership met the challenge of inspiring over 400 FTE’s to buy in and then to enable others to act. Four subcommittees were redirected, and given new leadership. Barriers and opportunities were identified utilizing tools learned from the academy. The four sub-committees are:

·        Basic Philosophy

·        Labor Support

·        Treatment Decision

·        Attitude and Morale

The entire committee is 22 strong and still growing; it includes the Leader/Facilitator (Mentor/Mentee), consultant, nurse managers, CNS, CNE, and staff members, Physician and Midwife champions.

To date, a few of our accomplishments have been, increased patient satisfaction measured by Press Ganey, transitioning of the newborn at the beside in labor and delivery that has  increased by 40% in one year, and seeking the patients core value,  increased by 50%. One of the next steps is a continued education plan for all staff focusing on evidenced based best practice related to FCC.  Pre and post survey results will be included on our poster.

Our successes to date have been credited to the leadership buy-in, modeling the way, listening to staff, reassignment of committee members, support of our director, VP of nursing and senior leadership. Financial support has been provided as well by the organization. Our staff to date has shown us that change is good, difficult, and challenging.  The culture and environment are changing to a FCC environment. The FCC skills are beginning to match our superior clinical skills and this had been heart felt by patients, staff and care providers. We are encouraged, empowered and enlightened to continue our journey. The poster will include two years of data when presented in June of 2008.
