Pets and New Babies:  Transitioning Your Pet To Your Newest Arrival
The arrival of a new baby is an exciting and magical time for new parents.  To prepare for the life-changing event, parents enroll in childbirth classes that focus on labor, delivery, and newborn care.  Often left out of this preparation process is the family pet.  According to the Humane Society of the United States, 39% of U.S. households own at least one dog and 34% own at least one cat (Humane Society of the United States, 2006).  Many families wonder how their pet will react to a tiny, crying person; will the baby and the pet be compatible and what can be done to help the baby and pet adapt to each other. A new and innovative childbirth preparation program taught by a veterinarian discusses how families can prepare for a new baby and include the family pet before and at the time of the baby’s arrival.  The class assists expectant parents transition their first “baby” (their pet) to the newest addition of the family.  This innovative program poster will review:

Preparing parents and families for the birth of their baby in innovative ways is one of the ways we can improve the health of women and infants – it is part of our mission as a nurse.
