Biographical Sketch: Janna Lesser has been involved in community-partnered exploratory and intervention studies with at-risk youth for more than 10 years. In her post-doctoral work on Health-Related Research with Vulnerable Populations at UCLA, Dr. Lesser began exploring protective actions of adolescent mothers and fathers at risk for HIV and for violence. In 2003 when she moved to San Antonio, Texas to join the faculty of the Family Nursing Care Department at the University of Texas Health Science Center, Dr. Lesser began her research collaboration with academic partner Manuel Oscos-Sanchez MD and community partner Isaac Cardenas and his colleagues at the AIT-SCM. Her teaching, clinical, and research interests are in psychiatric mental health nursing, with an emphasis on the use of community based participatory action research in the prevention of violence among youth in high-risk situations.
