Biographical Sketch: Manuel Angel Oscos-Sanchez MD is a native of San Antonio, Texas and is the director of the Youth Development Program of the Department of Family and Community Medicine at the University of Texas Health Science Center. He is the President-Elect of the Texas Chapter of the Society for Adolescent Medicine and is also the co-chair of the Juvenile Justice Special Interest Group of the Society for Adolescent Medicine. He has provided medical care for youth under the supervision of the Bexar County Juvenile Probation Department at the Juvenile Detention Center and at the Correctional Treatment Center for the past five years. He teaches family medicine residents and adolescent medicine fellows in these settings. His work on adolescent research and clinical issues with an emphasis on mental health and cultural competency has been presented at national and international forums. He created the Teen Medical Academy with the goal of promoting health careers among economically disadvantaged urban youth. The Teen Medical Academy is currently in its fourth year of implementation and will be used as the control intervention in this study. He has conducted a prospective randomized controlled evaluation of the intervention with the use of self-administered mail surveys. He has collaborated with Dr. Lesser for three years on adolescent violence research studies conducted in San Antonio with economically disadvantaged urban youth.
