Biographical Sketch: Dr. Shin Margaret Chao is the Chief of the Research, Evaluation, and Planning Unit of the Maternal, Child, and Adolescent Health Programs of Los Angeles County Department of Health Services since 2000.

 

Previously she was an epidemiologist for the California Children’s Medical Services, Acute Communicable Disease Program, and Sexually Transmitted Diseases Program of the Los Angeles County.  She received her Ph.D. in Epidemiology from University of Pittsburgh in 1990.  Her fields of interest include database applications, data management, geographical information system analysis, statistical analysis, epidemiology study, assessment and evaluation activities, and continuuous quality improvement tools.  A highlight of her recent work includes design and implemention of the first Los Angeles Health Overview of a Pregnancy Project  (L.A. HOPE) project which systematically collects  information from over 250 mothers residing in LA who suffered a fetal demise of infant loss for each year. In 2007, her team’s work  “Promising Approaches to Improve Birth Outcomes” received the Best Model Practice Award from the National Association of County & City Health Officials (NACCHO).
