Pulmonary complications from both obstetrical and nonobstetrical causes contribute to a mortality rate as high as 80% in the pregnant population. Prompt recognition and treatment of pulmonary edema, pneumonia, amniotic fluid embolism and ARDS are of the utmost importance to minimize maternal and fetal morbidity. Thus, a thorough understanding of normal pulmonary physiology, precipitating factors, nursing management, and collaborative care are paramount in caring for these patients.
