When IS Hypoglycemia NOT about the Pancreas?

Sherri Garber Mendelson, PhD, RNC, CNS, Education, Providence Holy Cross Medical Center, 15031 Rinaldi St., Mission Hills, CA 91345

You arrive on the postpartum unit at morning change of shift.  The husband of a low-risk patient who had a vaginal birth yesterday asks you to come see his wife.  He tells you “she doesn’t seem right”.  When you enter the room you note the patient has good color, slow respirations, and responds very slowly.  Her muscle tone is very weak.  Her pupils are alternately constricting and dilating. Determination of the appropriate nursing assessments and the team members to bring into the process will be followed by interventions based on the assessments.  Even experienced nurses will be faced at times with clinical situations that they have not previously encountered.  This clinical case study provides a framework for understanding the systems assessment that led to a finding of severe hypoglycemia, unlocking a serious and surprising diagnosis for this patient.
