You Lift Me up!!! a Look at An Innovative Lift Program for Perinatal

Peggy L. Cline, RNC, MSN, APRN-C, Perinatal, Saint Elizabeth Regional Medical Center, 5005 S. 76th, Lincoln, NE 68516

Lift systems are utilized routinely in healthcare to aid in the transfer and repositioning of patients, but little has been written about the utilization of the same systems in the perinatal department. The increased incidence of epidural usage and the bariatric patient population as well as the aging nursing population has necessitated the utilization and creation of a patient safety lift system in perinatal. A need analysis was conducted that revealed nursing and client factors that surrounded the lift system development.   A system was then created to minimize nursing injury while providing optimal patient support.  The system consists of a patient safety protocol which outlined safe patient lift limits as well as supportive devices in lifting, repositioning, and transferring of patients.  Barriers such as expense, staff education, and patient perception were addressed.  Staff was trained in the utilization of the lift system as well as scripting when discussing the lift system with patients and their families.  Creation of this system has decreased back injuries in staff and created an environment where proper body mechanics are taken to a new level.
