Family Centered Maternity Care (FCMC) is a patient care model in which the patient comes first and the emphasis is on family education, non-separation of well mothers and babies, breastfeeding, creative labor support strategies and family-centered developmental care of sick newborns. In Fall of 2005, the hospital Administration of University Medical Center in Lubbock, Texas, responded in the affirmative to a request by nursing leadership to develop a FCMC program. The process used to make an orderly transition included extensive nursing staff and physician education, changes in practice to reflect current evidence base and revision of patient education. Messaging to the community was intense and included development of a Women’s Advisory Council. Lessons learned include the need to have more trust in staff to accomplish the program goals and the need for more ways to communicate. Outcomes have been extremely positive. Patient and staff satisfaction have improved dramatically and physicians are happy with the improved quality of care and enhanced reputation of the medical center.
