Journal clubs have been created to provide a forum for the discussion of current evidence-based practice. These discussions can then lead to improved outcomes through the utilization of evidence-based practice at the bedside. Journal Club meetings are held once each month. The implementation of a journal club electronic blog has afforded staff nurses the opportunity to participate in the discussion of relevant research pertinent to their area of nursing practice. In addition, this information is available outside the designated journal club hours so the nurse is able to participate at their convenience. Although it is an ongoing process and very much a work in progress, the positive results and participation are expected to continue. In many university settings, there is ongoing research that study the success of the implementation of learning blogs in cohort with traditional teaching methods.

The journal club blog consists of a moderator and members of the journal club. Each month a new article is posted as well as access to articles are provided on our journal club forum bulletin board found in a prominent area on the unit. Those members who wish to participate are encouraged to obtain their own copy of the article to read before scheduled meeting times. The live meeting discussion will generate discussion related to relevance of topic to the improvement of bedside practice as well as the possibility of implementation to patient care with strategies for its realization.

At the conclusion of the live meeting, a synopsis of the live meeting is placed on the blog so those participants will have an understanding of what had occurred. Members are encouraged to post comments and suggestions to the blog for all staff members to read. Members are encouraged to provide further research they have obtained, or post questions or concerns in relation to the execution of the desired practice. We encourage those who present obstacles to provide a possible solution to encourage a shared responsibility in potential problem solving. In addition, a group file has been created to complement the blog with the ability to post other electronic media such as video, power point presentations and other literature.
