CenteringPregnancy, a model of group prenatal care is being embraced in a variety of setting across the United States. The model varies fundamentally from traditinal prenatal care because it presumes to empower the woman to assume responsibility of aspects of her own prenatal care. The educational component of CenteringPregnancy was implemented in a correctional facility where the pregnant women had no access to childbirth education classes. Measures of knowledge of pregnancy, fetal health locus of control and level of stress, social support and self esteem were made before and after implementation of the group. Women who participated in the group demonstrated increased knowledge of pregnancy, fetal health locus of control, and social support.
