This presentation will describe one community hospital’s effort to provide family-centered cesarean care from its inception in 2000 to present. Cesarean section rates in the United States are at an all-time high and are rising. Cesarean birth often presents a barrier to providing family-centered care. Contributing factors to the escalating U.S. cesarean rate and identification of the actual and potential adverse maternal-fetal outcomes of cesarean delivery will be presented. The principals of family-centered care will be reviewed and applied to the cesarean birth experience. Application of family-centered strategies the cesarean birth can promote the health of women and their newborns. Specific strategies to provide a family-centered cesarean will be presented that can be applied during the intra- and post-operative period. Recommendations for overcoming barriers and changing practice will also be discussed.
