Hemorrhage is a medical emergency that can occur before, during and after delivery. Hemorrhage is the leading cause of pregnancy-related mortality in the United States. The World Health Organization estimated that 20 million morbidies are due to hemorrhage annually. Quick and coordinated action on the part of the OB attending, nursing personnel and supporting staff can be life saving for the woman and her fetus who is experiencing a hemorrhage. A blueprint on the education and training of the medical and nursing staff on how to respond to a maternal hemorrhage is outlined. A review of normal maternal physiology and how to use a system for classifying hemorrhage is presented. IV solutions, uterotonic medications and blood component therapy specific to maternal hemorrhage are discussed. Intraoperative management and equipment reviews are presented. An example of preprinted hemorrhage order sets and hemorrhage wall charts are outlined. The benefits of how one Central Illinois Hospital took the challenge to establish their own obstetric simulation program aimed at improving patient safety and obstetric outcomes is presented
