Description of a model program for Perinatal Mood Disorders (PMD) implemented at Spectrum Health, the largest birthing hosptial in Michigan. This poster presentation describes the step by step process that this organization experienced as they created an all inclusive screening and support program supporting new mothers who were experiencing mood changes during the perinatal period.

Goals and Objectives were written and approved by the leadership team. Team develpment was initiated collaboratively with a multi discipline task force. A survey was initiated to demonstrate need in the community. Financial support was garnered in the form of grants. Marketing approach was critical for the community to access the services offered. And cultural competence was woven throughout the program at every opportunity to ascertain inclusion of all women regardless of age, culture, race, financial postion, etc.

Seven program components were implemented and a description for each was carefully planned and executed. First, PMD education took place both professionally and with the community. Once a good understanding of the illness was solidified, then a Mental Healthcare Referral Team was created to accept referrals. A telephone support network was develped so referrals could be accessed easily. Next a Support Group was created for new mothers and their families who were identified to offer peer and professional mentoring. An inpatient risk assessment survey was created and given to every delivered mother during her postpartum course prior to discharge. Each high risk identified mother received an intervention from the PMD Specialty Nurse daily. Over 24,000 new mothers have been screened to date. Research conducted with these mothers was performed and program satisfaction reports an overwhelming positive response. Follow up one year later also reported. And finally, implementation of outpatient prenatal and postpartum screening in the Obstetrical offices, clinics, and the Pediatric clinics were implemented using standard screening tools. Resources for organizations who desire to replicate this program develpment are discussed and available.
