Gestational diabetes represents a significant public health issue, an issue that can have dire consequences for a woman and her fetus. As the patient populations are increasingly divergent, successful teaching about glucose control requires recognition and incorporation of client differences in language, literacy, and culture. Education during the pregnancy also needs to address the importance of good blood glucose levels prior to future pregnancies, and prevention of Type 2 diabetes in the mother and her child after delivery. This program educates the professional on the importance of providing comprehensive patient education by addressing how to assess literacy, health literacy, use multilingual resources, and understand how culture can impact interpretation of information. In addition, special attention is given to the benefit of breastfeeding on the possible reduction of Type 2 diabetes in a mother and child.
