With publicly reported patient satisfaction data scores and patient expectations for the "perfect" birth experience, hospitals are under mounting pressure to optimize patient satisfaction scores. Sharp Mary Birch Hospital for Women, (part of the 2007 Malcolm Baldrige National Quality Award winning Sharp Health System), implemented the use of First Touch, an innovative way to connect the quality and science of caring, sustain patient satisfaction scores above the 90th percentile, while maintaining low nursing turnover and high employee satisfaction scores. Although First Touch techniques are simple, such as taking a few minutes to connect with the patient in the first interaction and saying goodbye at the end of the shift, the techniques are perfectly suited for the Women's population.
