Obesity-related complications of pregnancy continue to rise as the rate of obesity increases in the Unites States and Canada. Approximately one third of all women in the United States are obese, and obesity is more common in low-income and minority women. Perinatal nurses play a key role in identifying the needs of obese women and facilitating interdisciplinary collaboration during the childbearing cycle.
