While nitrous oxide for pain relief in labor is a common offering in many countries, it is rarely an option for laboring women in the United States. This presentation will provide an overview of nitrous oxide from its discovery in 1774 to the practicalities of and protocol for the safe administration of nitrous oxide in labor today. The presenter has 16 years of experience with nitrous oxide at her institution where the midwives have privileges to initiate its use.
