The purpose and value of developing a Family Advisory Council is to formalize the existing practice of family centered care by defining the relationship among patients, families and health care providers. To illustrate the importance of collaboration among patients, families, and health care providers the advisory council will consist of families and health care professionals whose mission is to ensure the delivery of the highest standard of comprehensive and compassionate health care. The council provides a mechanism for communication between professionals, patients and families that lead to a better understanding and cooperation in establishing priorities that reflect patient and family needs within the community. Cooperation among health care providers, patients and families is essential in facilitating open communication of information that leads to improved coordination of care and informed decision making with both science and the patient’s needs and values at the forefront. Lessons learned and outcomes from the development of the Family Center Advisory Council will be presented during the presentation.
