Title: SLE IN Pregnancy: Don't Take It Lightly!

Sherri Garber Mendelson, PhD, RNC, CNS, IBCLC , Administration, Providence Holy Cross Medical Center, Mission Hills, CA

Discipline: Women’s Health (WH), Professional Issues (PI), Newborn (NB), Childbearing (CB), Advanced Practice (AP)

Learning Objectives:
  1. Identify symptoms of SLE in 3 different organs
  2. Discuss two concerns in pregnancy complicated by SLE
  3. Develop a plan of assessment and care for the pregnant woman with SLE during the antepartum, intrapartum and postpartum periods
Submission Description:
Perinatal nurses need to be prepared to care for patients with a variety of preexisting conditions that may complicate their obstetrical course.  One such condition is systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE).  The prevalence of SLE in the US is approximately 53/100,000.  Due to its increased prevalence in women (nine times greater than in men) and its presentation typically during the childbearing years this disease may complicate a significant number of pregnancies.  Research into the specific risk factors, treatment success versus failure, and long-term outlook for patients with SLE specific to the perinatal patient will be presented. An understanding of the pathophysiology, symptom presentation, treatment modalities, and complicating factors during the peripartum and neonatal periods will help the perinatal nurse to assess for and anticipate patient complications.  Presentation of a perinatal course complicated by SLE will reinforce the multisystem nature of this disease.
