Title: Breaking out of Our Silo
Discipline: Women’s Health (WH), Professional Issues (PI), Newborn (NB), Childbearing (CB), Advanced Practice (AP)
Learning Objectives:
Submission Description:- Identify four national organizations that publish guidelines regarding perinatal care.
- Discuss three benefits from cross discipline attendance at national professional conferences.
- Discuss two methods for encouraging cross specialty dialogue and participation.
Current practice standards for various aspects of maternal-child nursing care are developed within our own professional organizations as well as outside of our boundaries. Standards of care for obstetrical and neonatal nursing may be found within specialty organizations for diabetes, emergency room nursing, critical care nursing and public health as examples. The danger of remaining isolated within perinatal nursing is failure to recognize and participate in the generation of research and discussion of advancement of perinatal care in a broader scope. Ultimately this will result in failure of nurses at the bedside to promote the highest standards of evidence-based perinatal care. Participation in conferences, reading journals and participating in dialogue with perinatal sub-specialties and across other related disciplines will allow the standards of care and guidelines for care generated by other organizations to reflect accurate, evidence-based information and will allow perinatal nurses a wider view of their own specialty within the healthcare arena.
