  3. Apply components of hourly rounding to their obstetrical service
Submission Description:
Hourly rounding is an intervention that has been used successfully on many nursing units in hospitals throughout the country.  While there is literature discussing the benefits of utilizing such a program on a medical/surgical hospital unit, there was no evidence for its use for the obstetrical population.  When the hospital put the challenge out that all nursing units would implement hourly rounding, we were given the opportunity to create a system that would work for the unique population that we serve: new mothers.             New mothers, both during and after labor, have needs that are similar to and different from the medical surgical patient.  While they still need assistance with pain management and position, they also need education regarding self care, caring for their baby, assistance with lactation, and time to rest and facilitate bonding as a family unit.  The nursing staff on these units strives to promote rest and educate their patients, in addition to providing the nursing care that is needed.            Building on the successes that the medical/surgical unit had with hourly rounding, we have created a program that gives our patients the time and attention they need along with the cluster of care that provides time to bond and rest.  The specific parameters we evaluated for this program include the patient’s pain management, how well the patient felt the nurse both responded to their needs as well as anticipated their needs, as well as the overall experience that the patient had.
