Submission Description:
"Dawn of a new Day" Healthier Babies from Diabetic Mothers is the result of a diabetic workgroup that was brought together at Salem Hospital to initiate a new approach to care of pregnant diabetic women.  The initiation of this group was to follow a similar project that was done on our medical/surgical units to standardize diabetic practice that reflects current research based standards.  Our group focused on creating a program that addressed the needs of Gestational Diabetics, Pre-pregnancy Diabetics, the use of appropriate medications with emphasis on nutritional counseling, lifestyle suggestions and follow up assessments and education for postpartum management.  An educational program was developed that included all healthcare providers, Nurses, Physicians, Dietitians, CDE (Certified Diabetic Educators) and CNA's.  It included a complete review of the pathophysiology of diabetes, all medication, nutrition and a new Women and Children's Center Protocol (which was tied to our hospital-wide Diabetes Protocol) which is a standardized approach to inpatient, outpatient and follow up care for diabetic pregnant women.
