Title: Using Science and Having Fun
Discipline: Childbearing (CB)
Learning Objectives:
Submission Description:- Discuss the use of group activities to support the needs of the antepartum patients.
- Discuss the psychological evaluation used to determine the effectiveness of the groups.
- Provide information for other antepartum units to help with implementation of group therapy.
The healthcare providers at Baylor University Medical Center’s Antepartum Unit have developed several group activities that assist with early identification and reduction of the incidence of depression associated with long term hospitalization. These group sessions provide the patients with much needed emotional support, education on their pregnancy, social time, and craft activities. While completing crafts such as knitted caps and scrapbooking for other moms with babies in the NICU, patients discuss their concerns, emotions and anxieties. These group sessions are facilitated by experienced staff members who support positive communication and provide referrals to the necessary discipline as needed. Working with the psychology department our healthcare providers have developed a survey tool to evaluate the effectiveness of these group sessions. Because of their unique needs our patients must have the benefit of science to treat their physical needs as well as the benefit of a multidisciplinary team to support their emotional and spiritual needs.
