Discipline: Women’s Health (WH), Childbearing (CB), Advanced Practice (AP)
Learning Objectives:
Submission Description:- Describe the current state of the health of women and neonates in Qatar
- Identify the similarities between Sidra’s mission, vision and the NIH’s designated Centers of Excellence model.
- Outline the needs assessment process and findings.
Sidra, located in Qatar, designed to be high quality Academic health Center, focusing on women’s and neonatal healthcare requires community outreach components. The three-fold mission of the program incorporates teaching, research and patient care in the areas of obstetrics, gynecology and neonatology among other specialties.
In order to design a high quality women’s and neonatal program in Qatar, it was first necessary to obtain a firm understanding of traditional and current practices in women’s and neonatal wellness, illness and healthcare. Various health indicators in addition to current morbidity, mortality and average life expectancies were included in the initial needs assessment. An effective program could not be developed without thoughtful consideration given to the religious and cultural beliefs of the various people groups residing in Qatar. After assimilating all necessary data, the mission of Sidra was finalized. Needs and expectations of the target population were identified through utilization of focus group research. From analysis of findings, strategies were developed and are in the process of being implemented to bridge healthcare gaps. Throughout the process, benchmarking against world class women’s and neonatal healthcare programs and the National Institute of health’s designated Centers of Excellence has been a very important component of the planning process.
This presentation by an AWHONN member will give an overview of the history and location of the nation of Qatar in addition to the most recent state of health for women and neonates in Qatar. The focus group research process conducted by this presenter and findings compiled from the needs assessments from the focus groups will be shared. Identification of strategies to bridge healthcare gaps and the implementation of the strategies will be explained.
