Title: The Impact of Nursing Informatics On Today’s Nursing Education, Practice, and Research

Disciplines: Professional Issues (PI)

Learning Objectives:
  1. Describe how informatics competencies can be used as the basis for the integration of nursing informatics into education, practice, and research.
  2. Differentiate various levels of informatics competencies by level of education and practice.
  3. Plan strategies to incorporate nursing informatics into your area of nursing practice.
Submission Description:
Informatics integrates nursing science, computer science and cognitive science to manage, communicate, and expand data, information, knowledge, and wisdom in nursing practice. Informatics competencies can guide the development of nurses. This presentation will describe several competency initiatives and suggest a method for perinatal nurses to develop their own competencies. Finally, perinatal nurses are challenged to participate in efforts to define their terminology so that standardized vocabulary will help to code perinatal nursing practice.
