Title: G1 - Necessary Steps to Preventing Maternal Deaths: What You Can Do?

Disciplines: Professional Issues (PI), Childbearing (CB)

Learning Objectives:
  1. Explain why complete, accurate ascertainment of every maternal death is necessary as a prerequisite to reducing the maternal death rate in the United States.
  2. Describe the basic process followed by the four countries of the UK following a pregnancy-related death.
  3. Explain why there is such a large underreporting factor in ascertaining maternal deaths in the United States.
Submission Description:
This session will explain what is lacking in maternal death reporting, why the quality of data varies from state to state, and the deficiencies in overall analysis. The session will provide a look at reporting systems that other countries employ and compare what states are beginning to tackle this problem here. The Safe Motherhood Quilt Project has been a way of honoring women who died from pregnancy-related causes, but it also provides a look at more kinds of preventable maternal deaths than most are aware of. The chief categories of deaths will be reviewed.
