Title: S1 - Physiologic and Psychological Effects of Therapeutic Showering In Labor

  1. Describe three possible psychological benefits of showering during labor.
  2. Name at least two safety measures that should be considered when implementing therapeutic showering.
  3. Discuss how therapeutic showering may facilitate the progress of labor.
Submission Description:
While showering is economical and usually available to women in labor, physiological or psychological effects of showering or its effectiveness in healthy low-risk laboring women is unknown. The purpose of this descriptive single group pretest/posttest study was to test physiologic (maternal and fetal heart rate, maternal temperature, blood pressure and plasma volume) and psychological (pain, coping, tension, fatigue, relaxation and anxiety) effects of 30” warm showers during active labor.
