Leading the Way: Developing a Minimally Invasive Gynecologic Surgery Program

Sunday, June 26, 2011
Margie Mueller Boyer, RNC, MS , The Women's Center, University Community Hospital, Tampa, FL

Discipline: Women’s Health (WH)

Learning Objectives:
  1. Describe minimally invasive surgical options for women requiring gynecology surgery
  2. List benefits of developing a minimally invasive gynecology surgery program.
  3. Identify 3 essential components in developing a minimally invasive gynecologic surgery program.

Submission Description:
Purpose for the program: The purpose of this program is multi-faceted.  First, to describe the types of minimally invasive gynecologic surgery as an alternative to open abdominal surgery.  Secondly, the benefits of each type of surgery will be presented.  Lastly, guidelines on how to develop and implement a minimally invasive gynecologic surgery program to meet the needs of women requiring surgery will be discussed.

Proposed change: A large percentage of basic and complex gynecologic surgery is still being done through open abdominal techniques.  Women should be informed of their choices and educated on advantages of each technique available.  Many complex gynecologic cases may be done in a less invasive technique via laparoscopic procedures.  The type of procedure may include Laparoscopic Assisted Vaginal Hysterectomy(LAVH), Total Laparoscopic Hysterectomy(TLH) and Robotic Assisted surgery.

Implementation, outcomes and evaluation: The implementation plan for a minimally invasive gynecologic program includes planning a well integrated team approach. The advantages of these less invasive procedures include smaller incisions, less blood loss, less pain, shorter hospitalizations and quicker recovery time.

Implications for nursing practice: Nurses need to be well informed in surgical options for women with gynecologic surgical needs.  Nurses are key in program development and ongoing coordination.
