G6 - More Than Just a "Little Cut": Guidelines for Safe Perioperative Nursing Practice

Disciplines: Professional Issues (PI), Childbearing (CB), Advanced Practice (AP)

Learning Objectives:
  1. Identify the evidence supporting nursing practice in the care of women having a cesarean.
  2. Identify at least 3 patient safety interventions relevant to care of the pregnant woman having surgery.
  3. Review the phases of post anesthesia care and implications for nursing practice.
Submission Description:
A cesarean is major surgery. Meeting the goal of providing comparable care to women having a cesarean birth to those patients having surgery in the general operating room, in the context of family centered care, can be challenging. This presentation will discuss the evidence-based practices supporting pre-operative, intra-operative and post-operative care for the woman having a cesarean birth.
