Title: G3 - Opiate Addiction In Pregnancy: Implications for Care and Practice

Disciplines: Newborn Care (N), Childbearing (CB), Advanced Practice (AP)

Learning Objectives:
  1. Identify the pharmacological properties of methadone.
  2. Verbalize risk factors associated with opiate addiction in pregnancy.
  3. Describe common symptoms associated with neonatal abstinence syndrome.
Submission Description:
It is estimated that over 5% of pregnant women use illicit drugs sometime during their pregnancy. Nurses lacking knowledge regarding opiate addiction may provide less than optimal care. In addition, a nurse’s personal attitude and potential biases regarding addiction in pregnancy may affect their delivery of care. Since opiate addicted pregnant women are more likely to have complications, there should be a commitment to increase nursing knowledge regarding addiction.
