Discipline: Advanced Practice (AP), Childbearing (CB), Professional Issues (PI)

Learning Objectives:
  1. Identify the challenges in creating a simulation learning environment for the staff utilizing the limited resources available in a facility with significant financial constraints.
  2. Recognize the importance of including all disciplines involved in the care of the patient
  3. Give examples of results of the simulations on patient safety, increase in collaborative teamwork, and staff comfort levels in emergent situations.
Submission Description:
Purpose for the program: Patient safety is always a number one priority. There were several needs identified by education.  We wanted to create new learning to capture the staff's attention and motivate them to incorporate the changes in their practice. We chose to use simulation as our method of instruction.  Due to limited reources, we had to be creative to implement this endeavor. Inclusion of all disciplines was very important to increase understanding of everyone's role and improve communication.

Proposed change: The simulation included process changes and introduction of new equipment.

Implementation, outcomes and evaluation: The process is undergoing continuous evaluation.   I'm planning to illustrate  early findings of surveys and event outcomes.

Implications for nursing practice: Overall, the staff expressed increased confidence in being prepared for these situations as well as improved communication with the medical staff.
