Discipline: Advanced Practice (AP), Childbearing (CB), Professional Issues (PI)

Learning Objectives:
  1. To use the hemorrhage screening tools to identify at risk patients of hemorrhage and initiate guidelines.
  2. To quantify blood loss by weighing saturated items and provide an accurate state of blood loss to the physician.
  3. To follow a hemorrhage algorithm, in order to prevent duplication of medications or procedures.
Submission Description:
Purpose for the program:

Our goal is to recognize and treat patients with obstetrical hemorrhage and to decrease the need to transfer patients to a higher level of care.

Proposed change:

Quantifying blood loss verses estimation.  Identifying at risk patients with pre-screening tools.  Preventing repetition of treatment without expected outcome by using hemorrhage algorithm.

Implementation, outcomes and evaluation:

Implementation of code Obstetrical Emergency Response Team (OBERT) and algorithm along with use of code OBERT code cart.  Evaluation will include measuring the number of cases needing to go to the operating room or transferred to a higher level of care.

Implications for nursing practice:

Nurses will be using the screening tools to identify at risk patients.  Weighing of saturated materials will provide a quantifiable blood loss.  Using the code OBERT code cart and algorithm will reduce the time of treatment and stabilization of the patient hemorrhaging.
