D2 - Obstetrical Triage: It’s Not First Come, First Serve

Title: D2 - Obstetrical Triage: It’s Not First Come, First Serve

Disciplines: Advanced Practice (AP), Childbearing (CB), Women’s Health (WH)

Learning Objectives:
  1. Review common issues related to obstetrical triage and medical screening exams.
  2. Describe an acuity scoring tool that may be utilized to prioritize treatment for women who present to Labor and Delivery and/or a Women’s Assessment Center.
  3. Discuss process implementation and outcome measures of an acuity scoring tool and triage process.
Submission Description:
Often in an obstetrical triage setting, there is a lack of defined processes to effectively triage women who present with a wide range of chief complaints. Without these defined processes, women may not be assessed in a timely manner and may be evaluated by a nurse on a “first come, first serve” basis. This type of process does not include acuity assignment and prioritization of women who have more urgent needs and thus outcomes may be compromised. This presentation will outline a process that involves a primary assessment, acuity assignment within specific time frames, requirements for designation of a qualified medical provider to do a medical screening exam, and outline measurement and evaluation of outcomes. This presentation is intended for nurses who work in a women’s assessment center (triage) and/or labor and delivery. The concepts are also applicable for nurses who work in outpatient centers.
