Title: D2 - Preventing Postpartum Depression: A Novel Paradigm Using Infant Calming and Sleep Promotion to Mitigate Postpartum Mood Disorder

Disciplines: Newborn Care (N), Women’s Health (WH)

Learning Objectives:
  1. Discuss why the first 3 months of life are best thought of as a “missing 4th trimester.”
  2. Explain the “calming reflex.”
  3. Perform 5 techniques (the “5 S's”) that activate the "calming reflex."
Submission Description:
Infant crying and parental exhaustion are key parenting challenges. They are proven triggers for many serious postnatal issues, including postpartum depression. An evidence-based paradigm will be presented that has been shown to reduce fussing and promote sleep. This innovative approach is taught in hospitals, military bases and health clinics across America.
