- Describe the pathophysiology of osteoporosis.
- Identify key risk factors for osteoporosis and fractures.
- Discuss current approaches to osteoporosis prevention, diagnosis and treatment.
Osteoporosis, a common condition that predisposes a person to fractures in later life, has its roots in adolescence. This session will include information on building, maintaining and protecting the skeleton throughout the lifespan. Calcium, vitamin D, exercise and lifestyle modification for prevention and treatment will be reviewed. Risk factors for osteoporosis and fractures, as well as pharmacologic treatment and fracture prevention will be included.
