Learning Objectives:
  • Provide an overview of gestational diabetes and discuss the steps involved in designing and conducting a research study to identify risk perceptions for diabetes among postpartum women with a recent history of gestational diabetes.
  • Describe the diabetes risk perceptions and knowledge deficits of postpartum women with a recent history of gestational diabetes.
  • Identify opportunities for tailoring diabetes prevention education programs to meet the needs of postpartum women with a recent history of gestational diabetes.

  • Submission Description:
    The purpose of this presentation is to describe the development, implementation and results from a research study designed to identify the knowledge deficits and risk perceptions of postpartum women with a history of gestational diabetes mellitus regarding developing diabetes in the future. Implications for practice change will be discussed and opportunities for tailoring patient education materials will be presented.
