Learning Objectives:
  • 1) To explain the details of the research study and provide background for the later discussion of the results
  • 2) To explain the maternal perspective relating to the lack of postpartum follow-up and responses to the 6-week postpartum check-up
  • 3) To detail what types of services new mothers wanted after hospital discharge

  • Submission Description:
Postpartum services need to correlate to women’s needs. Needs of the current generation of new mothers in relation to postpartum follow-up were unexplored. A qualitative descriptive study was conducted. Twenty-four low-risk postpartum women were recruited. In-depth interviews were conducted and content analyzed. Themes included: cut loose and abandoned; six-week check-ups: too little, too late; wanting human connection, constraints of new mothers and suggestions for services. Professional mental health and breastfeeding support services were found lacking
