Discipline: Women’s Health (WH)

Learning Objectives:
  • Identify two maternal characteristics associated with an increased risk for a prenatal diagnosis of a fetal condition.
  • Identify two major concerns women voice after a prenatal diagnosis has been made.
  • Summarize interventions that create a positive experience during the prenatal period in a pregnancy affected by a fetal condition.

  • Submission Description:
Approximately 3% of U.S. births are complicated by major fetal anomalies, which are the second leading cause of infant death, and a major cause of long-term infant disability. Perinatal and pediatric interdisciplinary team counseling, a novel approach to counseling women with a fetal anomaly, offers women an opportunity to obtain information of the fetal diagnosis and prognosis, interact with teams responsible for their infant’s anticipated post-natal course, and establish necessary relationships with health care providers.

The Association of Women's Health, Obstetric and Neonatal Nurses is accredited as a provider of continuing nursing education by the American Nurses Credentialing Center's Commission on Accreditation.
