Learning Objectives:
  • Discuss Healthy People 2020 breastfeeding goals and The Joint Commission's perinatal core measure supporting them.
  • Identify the Baby Friendly Hospital Initiative's "Ten Steps to Successful Breastfeeding".
  • Discuss The Louisiana GIFT Breastfeeding Education Program for improving maternity staff knowledge.

  • Submission Description:
Louisiana has breastfeeding rates that are among the lowest in the nation, as well as having associated infant morbidity and mortality rates among the highest. A maternity staff breastfeeding education program was delivered in 35 maternity hospitals across Louisiana from 2008-2012 to increase maternity staff breastfeeding knowledge and attitudes. Increased post-test scores (over 25% increase), with improved attitudes and motivation to advocate for evidence-based maternity practices facilitating breastfeeding resulted from the program.

The Association of Women's Health, Obstetric and Neonatal Nurses is accredited as a provider of continuing nursing education by the American Nurses Credentialing Center's Commission on Accreditation.
