Learning Objectives:
  • Appraise the safe sleep program at their hospital and identify updates that need to occur to implement the American Academy of Pediatrics recommendations on safe sleep environments
  • Develop a nursing and medical staff educational program to update and improve parent teaching on safe sleep environments
  • Design data collection tools to monitor compliance with safe sleep recommendations as a quality improvement project

  • Submission Description:
This quality improvement project aimed to prevent sleep related infant deaths through updating the current standard of practice in an academic medical center. The updates would endorse the American Academy of Pediatrics Task Force on Sudden Infant Death practice recommendations on promotion of Safe Sleep environments issued in 2011. Current newborn sleep practices, unit guidelines for safe sleep and parent education were evaluated and updated. Medical and nursing staffs were educated on current safe sleep recommendations.

The Association of Women's Health, Obstetric and Neonatal Nurses is accredited as a provider of continuing nursing education by the American Nurses Credentialing Center's Commission on Accreditation.
