Hall B (Long Beach Convention Center)
Renee' Jones, DNP, RNC-OB, WHNP-BC , Louise Herrington School of Nursing, Baylor University Louise Herrington School of Nursing, Royse City, TX

Discipline: Childbearing (CB)

Learning Objectives:
  • Identify the epidemiology of maternal morbidity and mortality as it relates to maternal hemorrhage.
  • Explain the methods and results of quantifying blood loss during delivery.
  • Discuss nursing implications of knowing the accurate amount of blood loss in an obstetric hemorrhage.

  • Submission Description:
In the US, obstetric hemorrhage has consistently remained the most common cause of preventable maternal mortality.Prevention of such an adverse outcome is dependent upon early identification of bleeding and aggressive initiation of treatment. The primary purpose of this evidence based project was to evaluate visual versus quantitative assessment methods in order to implement an accurate measurement of blood loss during delivery. The results indicated the amount of blood loss was underestimated (p=0.0001) by 21% to 28%.

The Association of Women's Health, Obstetric and Neonatal Nurses is accredited as a provider of continuing nursing education by the American Nurses Credentialing Center's Commission on Accreditation.
