Promenade Ballroom (Long Beach Convention Center)
LaToya Scales, BSN, RNC-OB , Labor and Delivery, Baylor University Medical Center, Dallas, TX

Discipline: Women’s Health (WH)

Learning Objectives:
  • 1. Differentiate between anticipated blood loss and the need for massive transfusion
  • 2. Design a Labor and Delivery specific Massive Transfusion Protocol through interdisciplinary work with the Blood Bank and Anesthesia
  • 3. Identify nursing responsibilities in caring for the patient and implementing the Massive Transfusion Protocol

  • Submission Description:
Postpartum hemorrhage remains a leading cause of maternal death. Early and effective communication is necessary between Blood Bank and Labor and Delivery to ensure best outcomes. The implementation of a Massive Transfusion Protocol (MTP) in Labor and Delivery would facilitate timely delivery of blood products in an emergency and provide staff with a tool to guide them in their practice.

The Association of Women's Health, Obstetric and Neonatal Nurses is accredited as a provider of continuing nursing education by the American Nurses Credentialing Center's Commission on Accreditation.
