Submission Description:
A qualitative descriptive study using semi-structured interviews of 25 low-income, pregnant African American women to gain an understanding of factors that drive dietary choices. A directed content analysis approach was used. The main theme was “Caving in to cravings.” Two subthemes were taste and appetite. There were numerous barriers to making health dietary choices. Cravings and education should be the focus of interventions to improve pregnancy nutrition and decrease risk for excessive gestational weight gain.
