B2 - Eclampsia!: New Guidelines and Practice Algorithms

Title: B2 - Eclampsia!: New Guidelines and Practice Algorithms

Disciplines: Childbearing (CB)

Learning Objectives:
  • Discuss the potential impact of ACOG's recommendations to withhold seizure prophylaxis (with magnesium sulfate) for women with preeclampsia without severe features.
  • Correctly recall the first three steps in the new treatment algorithm for eclampsia.
  • When given a case study, successfully chooses the more evidence-based treatment options to abate seizure activity and resuscitate the patient

  • Submission Description:
Some experts are concerned that new ACOG statements that recommend withholding magnesium sulfate therapy in patients diagnosed with "preeclampsia without severe features," may result in an increased incidence of eclamptic seizures throughout North America. This session will review the new guidelines; highlight suggestions for expanded assessments for "severe features of preeclampsia" during labor, delivery and postpartum; and present evidence based practice algorithms for eclampsia management in the event seizures occur.
