  • 1. Describe the factors associated with the surge of perinatal substance use disorders and the epidemic of opioid dependence among pregnant women.
  • Discuss the consequences of substance abuse on maternal and neonatal outcomes and the impact on families and communities.
  • Formulate multidisciplinary strategies for the detection, support and treatment of pregnant women with a substance abuse disorder.

  • Submission Description:
    This session will cover perinatal substance use disorders and effects on pregnancy and neonatal outcomes. Emphasis will be on the risks and benefits of long term opioid use for chronic pain and/or opioid dependence in pregnancy and the postpartum period as more women become pregnant while on long acting opioids. Effects of in-utero opioid exposure on fetal/infant development and benefits of breastfeeding to reduce neonatal abstinence syndrome will be discussed. Future considerations for opioid detoxification in pregnancy will be explored.
